Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., is fully committed to assisting those in need as well as the betterment of communities around the globe. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority works in partnership with national support organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), National Urban League, The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and many others.
Since 1922, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has made a substantial impact nationally and abroad. The Sorority has a proud history of offering service wherever chapters exists under the auspice of the organization’s signature program entitled, Project Reassurance. Through active participation in programs and through networking with other organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women, Urban League and the NAACP, Sigma’s legacy of service to improve the quality of life for all continues. The service of Sigma Gamma Rho’s global service includes Project Africa and Project Mwanamgimu.
National Programs
Operation BigBookBag
Operation BigBookBag is an invaluable resource for children, providing quick access to reference materials and study aids, enabling them to complete homework and stay current with coursework. It also supports shelters, centers, schools, and hospitals in meeting children's educational needs. Chapters and members collect and donate educational materials, equipment, and school supplies through this program.
Project Cradle Care
Project Cradle Care raises awareness of the disparate maternal and infant health outcomes Black women face through outreach, advocacy, education, and implicit bias training to mitigate these disparities. In collaboration with the March of Dimes, it addresses chronic stressors, health conditions, structural racism, and implicit biases in the healthcare system affecting Black women and their children.
Swim 1922
Swim 1922 is a partnership with USA Swimming designed to increase swim participation and decrease drowning rates in the community. In keeping with USA Swimming’s core objectives: Build the Base – Promote the Sport – Achieve Competitive Success and the Sigma Gamma Rho motto of Greater Service, Greater Progress, these organizations come together to affect change and influence the community of black women and girls.
Women's Wellness
The Women’s Wellness Initiative is a consolidated effort enabling chapters to focus on health issues impacting women, specifically women of color. It addresses areas such as Breast Cancer Awareness, Intimate and Domestic Violence, Heart Health, Diabetes Health, Mental Health, and other women-targeted issues, with programs conducted at any time during the sorority year.
Youth Symposium
Held simultaneously on the second Saturday of March by Alumnae Chapters across the nation, our Youth Symposium serves as a unifying effort during Sigma Week. Supported by undergraduate chapters and affiliates, the Symposium highlights prevalent concerns negatively impacting youth, such as drugs, teen violence, abuse, low self-esteem, suicide, teen pregnancy, and human trafficking.
Golden Alert
The Golden Alert is the sorority’s social and legislative action activities, initiatives and programming designed to empower and engage by providing meaningful resources, action plans and solutions for the communities it serves. Golden Alert issues can be those which call for immediate action to address the various issues and conditions plaguing our communities.
